Saera (さえら) is a Sapporo institution, a long-standing sandwich shop known for its distinctive crustless creations made with soft shokupan bread. Everything is prepared to order at the counter, with a menu split between savoury hot fillings and delicate seasonal fruit sandwiches. It’s a popular spot for both locals and international visitors looking for a classic Sapporo meal.

Guests consistently praise the signature sandwiches. The ebi-katsu is a favourite, featuring crispy, freshly fried shrimp, while the taraba (king crab) sandwich is a sought-after local specialty. The fruit sandwiches are also a major draw, filled with a light house-made cream and whatever is in season, such as juicy Yubari melon or Shine Muscat grapes. The soft, airy bread and friendly staff interaction are also frequently mentioned as highlights.

The shop's popularity means you should expect a queue, especially during morning and weekend peak hours. Some popular items, like the king crab sandwich, can sell out by late morning. A small number of reviewers have found the coffee bitter or the bread occasionally dry, but these are rare complaints among a vast majority of positive experiences.

For a unique, freshly made meal, Saera offers excellent value. A typical lunch costs between ¥1,000 and ¥1,999. Reviewers recently paid around ¥1,240 for a Taraba Crab & Ebi-katsu combination, and ¥990 for an Ebi-katsu & Fruit set. A coffee or other drink adds about ¥300–¥630 to the bill.
