Sushi Miyakawa (すし宮川) is a Michelin three-star counter in Sapporo that has become a pilgrimage site for its expression of Hokkaido's finest seafood. The experience is an omakase-only affair, guided by a deep respect for local ingredients and precise technique, most notably the use of a distinctive red-vinegar shari (sushi rice) prepared for exact temperature and texture for each piece.
Guests consistently praise the signature dish: steamed Ezo abalone served with a rich, concentrated liver sauce. In a final flourish, the remaining sauce is mixed with a small portion of shari, ensuring not a drop is wasted. Other highlights frequently mentioned by reviewers include creative tsumami (small appetizers), comparative tastings of different uni (sea urchin) from regions like Rishiri and Yoichi, and a perfectly marinated block of chu-toro (medium-fatty tuna).
While the experience is almost universally lauded, securing a seat is the main challenge. Bookings are notoriously difficult, and a seat in the small private room is said to offer a slightly less immediate experience than the main counter. A few isolated reviews mention a rare dip in quality for a single dish or feeling that drinks were pushed, but these are not common complaints.
Reviewers in 2024-2026 reported the omakase course cost between ¥30,000 and ¥32,000. With drinks and any optional extras, the final bill often landed between ¥39,000 and ¥47,000. Despite the high price point, diners overwhelmingly consider it excellent value for an experience of this calibre.
