Susukino Sushi Kin (すゝき野 鮨金) is an eight-seat counter in Sapporo dedicated to classic Edo-mae sushi. The focus is squarely on top-tier Hokkaido ingredients, presented as nigiri with a distinctive red-vinegar shari that many guests single out for praise. The chef also incorporates idiosyncratic touches, such as a signature chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) with blue cheese and aged karasumi (cured mullet roe).

Guests consistently praise the quality and variety of the seafood. Multiple types of seasonal uni (sea urchin) are a highlight, as is a recurring pairing of kegani (hairy crab) and uni. Other frequently lauded pieces include otoro and chutoro (fatty tuna), kohada (gizzard shad), anago (saltwater eel), and hotate (scallop). Reviewers, both Japanese and international, commend the chef's precise knife work and the consistent balance of each piece of nigiri.

A minority of guests have reported service as brusque or cold, with some feeling that foreign visitors were treated differently. A few also noted a lack of price transparency on the drinks list and, in at least one case, disputed a charge for bottled water. Some diners felt the omakase course was short for the price.

Dinner for one typically costs between ¥30,000 and ¥39,999. Recent reviews from 2024–2026 consistently cite the omakase course at around ¥33,000. For diners who prioritise exceptional seafood and classic technique, most find the experience to be worth the price. However, those expecting extensive tsumami (appetizers) or transparent drink pricing may find it less valuable.

  • Getting There: The restaurant is a 2-minute walk from Exit 2 of Susukino Station on the Namboku Line. Note that the entrance is on Miyako-dori street, not through the main entrance of the Matsuoka Building.
  • Reservations: Reservation only. Booking weeks, often a month or more, in advance is essential as seats are highly sought after.
  • Seating: There are 8 counter seats.
  • Payment: Credit cards (VISA, Master, JCB, AMEX, Diners) are accepted. Electronic money and QR code payments are not. A 5% service charge is added to the bill.
  • Practical Information: The restaurant is entirely non-smoking. Arrive on time, as some guests report a strict policy on lateness. Be aware that drink menus may not list prices; it is wise to ask before ordering.
  • Dress Code: Please refrain from wearing strong perfumes, colognes, or fabric softeners.
