Kushi Katsu A-bon (串かつ あーぼん) in Ashiya is widely regarded as one of Japan's finest kushi-age restaurants. The specialty here is an exceptionally light and precise frying technique. Using ultra-fine breadcrumbs and imported Dutch lard, with the oil completely replaced between services, the kitchen produces a thin, non-greasy crust that allows the delicate ingredients within to shine.

Service is omakase-style, with a course of around 20 to 25 skewers brought out one by one. Guests consistently praise signature items like the whole prawn with its head, a perfectly rare scallop, and creative combinations such as foie gras with eggplant or the house special of sea bream, cheese, and shiso. The meal also includes a tea-soba palate cleanser and unique dessert skewers. The experience is part of the appeal: staff advise on which of the several condiments to use for each skewer, with the ingredients sometimes only revealed after you've eaten them.

While the food receives near-universal acclaim, the logistics can be challenging. The restaurant is small, with only two strict seatings per evening, and securing a reservation is notoriously difficult. A small minority of reviewers have also noted that service can feel brisk, with minimal explanation of the ingredients during the meal.

Reviewers in 2024–2026 reported the omakase course cost between ¥8,250 and ¥9,500. With a few extra skewers and drinks (which are reasonably priced around ¥700), the final bill typically landed between ¥15,000 and ¥19,500 per person. Most diners consider this excellent value for the level of craft, ingredient quality, and the sheer number of skewers you can enjoy without feeling heavy afterward.
