Marumasara (丸祇羅) serves one thing at lunch: a spice-curry plate that changes daily and is meant to be mixed. A base curry sits on basmati rice with parippu (Sri Lankan lentil curry), dry fennel keema, chutney and five vegetable sides. You add small bowls of other curries as you eat, so the flavour shifts with each bite. Reviewers routinely call it the most beautifully plated curry they have seen. The room is dim and rustic, with recorded cicadas and crickets in place of music. It was selected for Tabelog's Curry EAST "Tabelog 100" in 2023, 2024 and 2026.

The plating comes up in almost every review. The kaki-ebi curry (oyster and prawn) is the most popular add-on and the most praised single dish, for its deep seafood flavour. Hotate achar (pickled scallop), mutton rogan josh, the spice lamb chop and the cardamom lassi are also frequently recommended. Many guests appreciate how patiently and thoroughly staff explain the menu.

The recurring complaint is upselling. Reviewers describe long scripted menu explanations and pressure to add curries and toppings, and several left angry about it. Some found the base curry thin and lukewarm because it is spread across a flat metal plate. The curries are mild, and some find the base portion small without extras. A few reviewers called it overpriced for curry.

Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid around ¥1,350–1,450 for the base plate. Add-on prices they reported were kaki-ebi curry +¥450, mutton rogan josh +¥500, hotate achar ¥300–350, spice lamb chop +¥900, cardamom lassi ¥550 and bottled beer ¥600–650. With two add-ons and a drink, most lunch bills came to ¥2,500–3,200. The restaurant opens for lunch only, so there is no dinner spend.

Value is fair if you order the base plate plus one add-on, which reviewers say is filling. Once you follow every recommendation it falls away quickly, and several reviewers felt ¥3,000 was too much for a curry lunch.

  • Getting there: 5 minutes' walk (about 400 m) from JR Kannai Station. The restaurant is on the 3rd floor of the Ichiwa Building, reached by stairs only, and the entrance is hard to spot. Fukutomicho is a nightlife and red-light area.
  • Payment: cash only. Credit cards, electronic money and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Booking: not required, as this is a walk-in queue. You can reserve a meal (not a seat) via Instagram so it does not sell out. One reviewer did this by the day before.
  • Queues: from the 11:30 opening, 10–16 people often wait on the stairs for 30–40 minutes. It is quieter after about 13:30.
  • Children: welcome, including babies. Strollers are welcome, and staff will help carry them up the stairs.
  • Seating: 21 seats (7 at the counter, 14 at tables). There are no private rooms, but the venue can be hired for groups of 20–50.
  • Smoking and parking: non-smoking throughout. There is no parking, but coin parking is nearby.
  • Menu: handwritten and in Japanese only, but staff explain each option verbally.
  • Spice and add-ons: the curries are mild and the heat cannot be adjusted. Chilli paste costs about ¥100. Decline add-ons firmly if you do not want them.
