Chuka Soba Takayasu (中華そば 高安) is a fixture in Kyoto's competitive Ichijoji ramen district, drawing crowds for its signature combination: a rich, creamy white broth made from chicken and pork, served alongside monstrously large pieces of curry-spiced karaage (fried chicken). This pairing defines the experience and has made the shop a local institution.

Guests consistently praise the balance of the soup, which is described as rich and deep yet clean on the palate. The suji ramen, featuring tenderly stewed beef tendon, is another highlight, as are the generous portions of chashu pork. The main attraction besides the ramen is the karaage — huge, crispy, and juicy, with a distinctive light curry flavour. Many visitors opt for a set menu, which combines ramen with karaage and rice for a very substantial meal. For a change of pace, tables are equipped with a spicy nira-goma (garlic chive and sesame) condiment.

While overwhelmingly popular, a few reviewers find the broth slightly too salty or sweet for their taste. The sheer size of the portions can also be a challenge for smaller appetites. However, these are minor points in a sea of positive feedback.

Expect to pay around ¥980 for the standard Chuka Soba ramen and ¥1,480 for the suji ramen. A weekday lunch set with ramen, one piece of karaage, and rice was recently reported at ¥1,410. For hungry diners, this represents excellent value, though those with smaller appetites might be better off ordering dishes à la carte.
