GOKKEI Ichijouji honten (麺屋 極鶏 一乗寺本店) has built a reputation on one thing: a ramen broth so thick it’s often described as a potage or stew. The signature bowl, 鶏だく (toridaku), features a chicken broth so dense and concentrated that reviewers joke a spoon could stand upright in it. This extreme texture, which clings heavily to the thin noodles, is the shop's defining characteristic and the reason for its consistent queues.
Guests overwhelmingly praise this unique depth and texture, with many calling it an experience of ‘eating soup’ rather than drinking it. For a change of pace, the spicy 赤だく (akadaku) and shrimp-infused 海老だく (ebidaku) variants are also popular. A common recommendation is to order a side of rice, or the egg-on-rice set, to enjoy with the leftover broth. However, the style is polarizing; some find the broth too heavy, salty, or one-dimensional. The small shop size also means queues are a regular feature, though they tend to be shorter in the late evening.
The value is widely considered excellent. Reviewers in recent years have paid around ¥1,000 for the signature toridaku ramen, and about ¥1,350 for a set with egg on rice. For a distinctive, satisfying bowl, it offers a memorable meal at a very reasonable price.
