But the main reason people travel here, from locals to international visitors, is the food. Two dishes in particular have made its reputation: the café-style curry rice and the tamago sando, or egg sandwich.
Guests consistently praise the Japanese curry for its depth of flavour — slightly sweet on first taste, followed by a slow, warming heat. It's often ordered topped with a fried egg or a crispy pork cutlet (katsu). The other star is the egg sandwich, which features a remarkably thick, fluffy omelette seasoned with dashi, served between slices of soft white bread. Beyond these hits, reviewers note the solid coffee, generous portions, and quick service, creating a bustling, welcoming environment.
The café's popularity and small size do present some practical challenges. It's often crowded, with queues forming at peak morning and lunch hours. The most common complaint, especially from taller diners, concerns the very low and narrow tables, which are likened to old school desks and can be uncomfortable.
Kissa Tirol offers exceptional value. Lunch is typically under ¥1,000, with reviewers in recent years paying around ¥800 for curry rice, and between ¥980 and ¥1,050 for the katsu curry. A full egg sandwich costs about ¥800 (a half portion is also available), while coffee is around ¥450. Ordering a drink with a meal usually earns a small discount.
