Rakusha An (洛叉庵) is a small, takeout-only sweet shop in a residential corner of Kyoto, but its reputation is immense. It specializes in one thing: warabimochi of an almost impossibly soft, fluid texture. Reviewers consistently describe it as 'drinkable'—a confection so delicate that it melts in the mouth like water. The secret is that every batch is made fresh only after a customer makes a reservation, ensuring the texture is perfect at the moment of pickup.

The star product, praised in nearly every review, is the Shiki Warabi. These large, trembling pieces of mochi are generously coated in fragrant kinako (roasted soybean flour) and possess a subtle, restrained sweetness. Guests love the honest ingredients and the generous portions for the price. Many also mention the warm, attentive service from the couple who run the shop. Recent visitors paid around ¥700–¥750 for an 8-piece pack, with boxed sets of 8 and 16 pieces quoted at approximately ¥730–¥870 and ¥1,500–¥1,600, respectively. Most agree it's excellent value for a unique, high-quality product.

Be aware of the practicalities. Rakusha An is strictly reservation-only, and popular pickup times can be booked out days in advance. The shop itself is unassuming and easy to miss. The warabimochi's extreme softness makes it difficult to handle with chopsticks (a spoon is recommended), and its very light sweetness may not appeal to all. It's also highly perishable and should be eaten the same day.

  • Booking: Reservations by phone are required, typically 1–3 days in advance. This is a takeout-only shop with no seating.
  • Getting There: The shop is located in a residential area of Kita Ward, about a 15-minute walk from Kitaoji Station.
  • Payment: Cash only. Credit cards, electronic money, and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Practical Notes: The warabimochi is perishable and best eaten on the day of purchase. If transporting it for a while, a cooler bag is recommended. Due to its softness, a spoon is more practical than chopsticks.
  • Parking: No dedicated parking is available, but paid coin parking can be found nearby.
