Coffee Marumo (珈琲 まるも) is a portal to Japan's Showa era. Opened in 1956 inside the Marumo ryokan, this classic kissaten (coffee house) has preserved its old-world character, making the atmosphere its principal draw. The space is furnished with dark wood and distinctive Matsumoto mingei (folk craft) antiques, creating a calm, nostalgic environment where guests can linger over coffee.
The menu is built around the house blend, a recipe unchanged since 1956. Reviewers consistently praise this pour-over coffee, describing it as aromatic, strong, and often having fruit-forward notes. It pairs well with the selection of homemade sweets, which are another highlight. Popular choices include a rich tiramisu, a distinctive sesame (goma) Mont Blanc, and a matcha cheesecake. The morning set, featuring generous honey-walnut or buttered toast, is also a favourite.
While overwhelmingly positive, a few minor criticisms appear. Some guests have found the service occasionally brusque, and a rare cup of coffee was described as overly sour. The café is popular and can be busy, with reviewers noting queues and, in one case, an unusual one-by-one entry system that caused long waits. A single coffee may seem a little expensive to some, but most feel the sets offer good value.
Expect to spend around ¥1,000–¥1,999 for lunch or a dessert set. Reviewers recently paid ¥800 for a single house blend coffee, around ¥1,250 for the morning set, and about ¥1,350 for dessert sets with coffee.
