Sanjiro (三城) is a lunch-only soba house in Matsumoto with no menu and no choices. A single elderly proprietress in kimono runs a silent dining room with no music and serves one fixed sequence: a cup of house-brewed sake, a small seasonal appetiser, thick hand-cut zaru soba (chilled buckwheat noodles on a bamboo tray), pickles cured in the koji left over from her sake, sobayu (the hot noodle-cooking water) and a sweet. The shop moved here from Tokyo in 2006, where a critic once called it "a treasure of Tokyo". It was named to Tabelog's soba "Tabelog 100" list in 2022, 2024 and 2025.

Most reviewers praise the soba itself, which is fragrant, firm and thickly cut. Many suggest tasting it first with a little salt alone. The pickles are mentioned almost as often, and some guests call them the highlight. The fruity house sake, the giant simmered hanamame (runner beans) or buckwheat yokan served as dessert, the plush hot towels and the ceramics also draw comment. Visitors from Denmark, Spain and English-speaking countries describe the calm, ritual-like pace as the point of the visit.

The service is the main complaint. Several guests were curtly reprimanded for checking a phone, sitting down before being shown a seat or passing their sake to a companion. Some unfamiliar women dining alone say they were treated the same way, and a few guests left upset. Walk-ins, including foreign families, are regularly turned away. A minority found the soba soft, broken or watery, the pickles too salty or the portion small.

There is no dinner service, and the lunch course costs a fixed ¥2,000 per person. Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid around ¥1,000 for an extra pour of sake, which comes noticeably larger than the first. One reviewer was charged ¥2,000 for a second tray of soba and only found out from the bill, so ask before ordering more. Another ate and drank for ¥3,000, and a family of five paid ¥10,000. A service charge may be added. Reviewers consistently call it excellent value for sake, appetiser, soba, pickles and dessert of this quality.

  • Getting there: 10 minutes' walk (about 700 m) from JR Matsumoto Station.
  • Booking: reservation only, by phone on 0263-35-0234, most likely in Japanese. Book by the day before. Walk-ins are usually refused, though same-day calls sometimes work.
  • Hours: lunch only, Mon–Sat 11:30–15:00, closed Sunday.
  • Payment: cash only. Credit cards, electronic money and QR code payments are not accepted.
  • Children: not suitable for families with children. The restaurant describes itself as a quiet space for adults.
  • House rules: photography is strictly prohibited, and so is using phones, tablets or laptops. Greet the proprietress on entering, wait to be seated and speak quietly.
  • Sake: it is served automatically. Say so at once if you are driving or do not drink.
  • Menu: there is none. The only offering is the zaru soba course.
  • Seats: 20, at three tables for four and one table for eight. There are no private rooms and no private hire.
  • Smoking: non-smoking.
  • Parking: none at the restaurant. Coin parking is available nearby.
