Patisserie Chocolaterie Emera (パティスリー ショコラトリー エメラ) has sold cakes in Tomio since 1970. The second-generation chef trained in Belgium and at Gâteau des Bois, Nara's leading patisserie. The shop now runs on two tracks. One is the decades-old house cake, the Emera: sponge, custard, whipped cream and seasonal fruit. The other is a range of Belgian-style chocolate cakes and bonbons. Some items are made to order. A Belgian waffle is baked fresh between 12:00 and 15:00, and a limited mille-feuille is assembled on the spot so the pastry stays crisp. The shop was named to Tabelog's Sweets WEST 100 list in 2023 and 2026.

The Emera cake comes up in almost every review, praised for its airy sponge and light, not-too-sweet creams. Reviewers repeatedly single out the chocolate cakes as the real strength, among them Duo, Forêt Noire and a tonka-bean cake. They also rate Miyabi, a hōjicha (roasted green tea) cake, along with the seasonal fruit tarts, the pudding made to the founding recipe and the crisp waffle. Several people who usually find cake too rich say they could easily finish two. Courteous staff, careful packing and a spotless white-and-mirror shop are mentioned constantly.

Criticism is limited. Some find the prices slightly high, and a few consider the Emera simply a good ordinary shortcake that does not live up to its fame. There are isolated reports of a cake that tasted off, a cream that underwhelmed and one badly damaged department-store online order. At Christmas, pickup meant a 20-minute queue outside.

Reviewers in 2024–2026 paid around ¥593 for the Emera, ¥723 for Miyabi, ¥763 for the Fraisier and ¥792 for the mango or peach tarts. The pudding was ¥462, the waffle ¥500 and macarons ¥356 each. The Sablé Nostalgie cookie tin, sold twice a year, was ¥3,812. The shop serves no lunch or dinner, and a typical visit costs ¥1,000–2,000 at any time of day. Most reviewers consider ¥600–800 a slice fair for the craft, and one found the tarts cheap for what they contain. A minority note that the bill adds up quickly.

  • Getting there: 3 minutes on foot (about 140 m) from Tomio Station on the Kintetsu Nara Line. The shop is on a side street and easy to miss.
  • Takeaway only: there is no eat-in seating and no private room. Cakes are meant to be eaten the same day.
  • Booking: not necessary, as this is a walk-in shop. Orders can be reserved by phone (0742-44-6006), which helps around Christmas.
  • Timing: waffles are sold 12:00–15:00 only, croissants at weekends only, and soft-serve ice cream in summer. Stock thins out near closing, and the shop may close early when cakes sell out. Reviewers report summer hours to 18:00 from June to September.
  • Payment: credit cards, electronic money and QR payments are accepted.
  • Children: welcome. The shop is family friendly.
  • Smoking: non-smoking.
  • Parking: partner car park (Narashin).
  • Photos: officially not allowed inside, but staff often agree if you ask.
  • Language: all reviews are in Japanese, so English support is unknown.
