Sakagura Oodaiko (酒蔵 大太鼓) is an oden institution in Kitakyushu, centred on a large counter that wraps around a simmering pot of amber dashi. The experience is quintessentially local: you watch the master at work, pointing to the items you want, which are then plucked from the rich, chicken-forward broth. It has long been recognised by the Bib Gourmand for its quality and value.
Guests consistently praise the depth of flavour in the dashi, which soaks deep into classics like 'shimi-shimi' daikon radish, tender suji (beef tendon), and fluffy hanpen fish cake. The menu also features less common oden items like kuzukiri noodles, local Wakamatsu tomatoes, and shungiku (spring chrysanthemum). Beyond oden, side dishes like gomasaba (mackerel with sesame), nukadaki (fish simmered in fermented rice bran), and large onigiri rice balls are also popular, often paired with local sake or beers like Sorachi Ace.
While the food is highly regarded, some recent visitors have reported issues with billing, including mistakes and an unexpected seat charge of ¥300 per person applied after one hour. A few guests who questioned charges described the staff as curt. The space is counter-only, and can get tight and noisy during peak hours.
Dinner typically costs between ¥3,000 and ¥3,999 per person. Reviewers recently reported bills such as ¥3,800 for a solo diner, and ¥4,120 for two people. Sample item prices include daikon for ¥260, hanpen for ¥210, and gomasaba for ¥580. Most consider it excellent value, provided you are vigilant about the bill.
