Hatsu Chan (初ちゃん) is a classic counter-only izakaya that feels like a step back into Japan's Showa era. Presided over by its long-time owner, this small Hiroshima spot is famous among locals for its hearty, no-frills meat dishes cooked right in front of you.
The undisputed star of the menu is a massive, incredibly tender salt-and-pepper steak, served with a mountain of salad. Diners consistently praise its size and quality. Other beloved dishes include the nira-reba, a rich and flavorful plate of fresh liver and garlic chives in a sweet-savory sauce, and pieces of oden simmered in a large communal pot. Portions are generous, and most regulars consider it excellent value for money.
However, visitors should be aware of the restaurant's distinct character. The owner's service is often described as blunt or abrasive, and there are strict, unwritten house rules. Guests may be refused service if they don't order alcoholic drinks, try to order only the steak, or are dining alone. Menus often lack prices, which can be unsettling. Some non-Japanese visitors have reported feeling unwelcome.
Expect to spend around ¥3,000–¥6,000 per person for a full meal with drinks. Reviewers have recently paid approximately ¥3,000–¥4,000 for the steak, around ¥1,000 for the nira-reba, and ¥200 per piece of oden.
