Nokiya (乃きや) is a local Hiroshima favorite, celebrated for its hand-made Sanuki-style udon. The noodles are known for their remarkable chewiness and length (a quality known as koshi), served in a clear yet deeply flavorful dashi broth made from iriko (dried sardines) and kombu. Alongside the noodles, the tempura is a consistent highlight, praised for its thin, crisp coating and generous portions.
Reviewers frequently recommend dishes like hiyahiya (cold noodles in cold broth), which was recently reported at just ¥380, and various tempura-bukkake sets, which typically cost around ¥780–¥900. In the evenings, the shop offers a “horoyoi” set, a bargain bundle including two drinks, oden, and a mini udon for about ¥1,180, making it an outstanding value proposition.
However, visitors must be aware of significant issues with service. Multiple recent reviews from foreign tourists (2024–2026) report being explicitly refused entry with a “Japanese only” message. While some non-Japanese speakers have been admitted, the experience is inconsistent, and there is a real risk of being turned away. Other diners note that service can be brusque and rushed, with the owner keen on quick turnover.
Despite the excellent value, the unpredictable entry policy makes Nokiya a risky choice for international visitors. The food is undeniably good, but the welcome is not guaranteed.
