Ni no Kura is an intimate, six-seat sushi counter in Sapporo that operates by reservation only. The experience is built around a single omakase menu where the chef places as much emphasis on the inventive opening appetisers, or tsumami, as on the sushi itself. The small scale and simultaneous start times for all guests allow for a performance-like service with complex, tightly timed dishes.

Guests consistently praise the creativity of the tsumami course. Signature items that appear in many reviews include a unique pairing of herring roe and cheese (kazu-no-ko cheese), spear squid (yari-ika) seared with a hot iron, and generous rolls of fatty tuna (toro) and sea urchin (uni). Theatrics like injecting ponzu sauce into oysters or using a torch add to the show. The nigiri course that follows is also extensive, often featuring twelve or more pieces. While many international guests report a friendly and welcoming experience, a few rare but notable reviews have alleged discriminatory service.

Some diners find the vinegared sushi rice (shari) a little strong for their taste. The main caution from reviewers concerns drinks, which can be expensive and are not always listed on a menu; it’s wise to ask for prices upfront. One guest even reported being charged for water.

The omakase course costs between ¥18,700 and ¥22,000, depending on the day's ingredients. One recent bill for two people with beer came to ¥39,160. Most reviewers find the food to be excellent value, but note that drinks can significantly increase the final price. Be aware of a strict cancellation policy; one guest reported a fee of around ¥17,600 for a late cancellation.

  • Booking: Reservations are mandatory and should be made well in advance for one of the six counter seats. Late arrival of more than 15 minutes may be treated as a cancellation.
  • Location: The restaurant is a 7–10 minute walk from Maruyama Koen or Nishi 18-chome subway stations.
  • Payment: Credit cards (Visa, Master, JCB, Amex, Diners) are accepted. Electronic money and QR code payments are not.
  • Children: Children are welcome if they are able to eat the full adult omakase course.
  • Dress Code: Please refrain from wearing strong-smelling perfume.
  • Cancellations: A fee is charged for cancellations made from the day before the booking. Confirm the exact policy when you reserve.
