Tokyo has the densest concentration of outstanding restaurants on the planet: more Michelin stars than Paris and New York combined, with the local quality bar set by Tabelog — the Japanese rating system where even a 3.5 signals an exceptional kitchen. This ranking gathers the city's best places to eat, from omakase sushi counters in Ginza to station-side ramen shops and third-wave coffee bars. Every venue gets an editorial grade from A+ to F that weighs its Tabelog score, reviews, and how realistic it is to actually get in.
The easiest way to navigate is by neighbourhood. Fine dining clusters in Ginza and around Tokyo Station; izakaya and bars fill Shinjuku (Golden Gai, Omoide Yokocho) and Shibuya; century-old institutions live on in Asakusa; and the freshest seafood is at the Tsukiji outer market. A budget tip: lunch sets at one- and two-star restaurants often cost 3–5 times less than dinner from the same kitchen.
The golden rule of Tokyo dining: book ahead. Top sushi and kaiseki counters fill up weeks in advance, and some places accept new guests only on a regular's introduction — those are flagged on their cards. At the same time, thousands of excellent ramen shops, izakaya and cafés take no reservations at all: the availability badge on each card shows where you can simply walk in. And carry cash — small family-run spots still don't always take cards.
